Working with the chest

The chest isn’t flat. The pec muscles curve, the sternum is a hard ridge between them, and the collarbones frame the top. Celtic knotwork can follow each of those features, which is why a well-placed chest piece looks built into the body.

One pec or both

A single-pec piece is usually round or shield-shaped and sits on the upper half of the muscle, angled slightly toward the shoulder. A shield knot or a Dara knot (a modern design whose name is usually linked to the Irish word for oak) both fill that space well. A full chest panel spans both sides and is almost always mirrored. Even small differences between the halves stand out, so ask your artist to draw one half and mirror it exactly.

Sternum and center line

A vertical cross, a column of interlace or a long knot that follows the breastbone fits the center line. On people with breasts, sternum pieces often sit between and just below them, and the design can curve outward under each side. Keep it fairly bold: the skin over the sternum is thin and moves with every breath, which makes very fine detail harder to place cleanly.

Collarbone line

A strip of interlace following the collarbone works as a standalone piece or as the top border of a larger chest panel. It also connects naturally into a shoulder cap later. See the shoulder gallery for designs that join well.

Sizing

A single-pec knot typically runs 4-6 inches. Full chest pieces are sized to your body, so the stencil gets fitted while you stand straight with your arms relaxed. Leave generous gaps between strands, since chest skin can change with weight shifts over the years.

Healing

Shirts rub a new chest tattoo, so wear something loose and soft for the first week or two. Seatbelts can be uncomfortable for a few days.

Using the prompts

Every concept lists its ChatGPT prompt. Add “mirrored symmetrical chest panel” or “single pectoral placement” to shape the layout before you take it to your artist.

Questions people ask

Should a chest tattoo go over the heart?

Plenty of people put a meaningful symbol, like a Claddagh or a family knot, on the left side for that reason. Visually either side works, so choose based on meaning and how it balances with your other tattoos.

How painful is a sternum tattoo?

The sternum is one of the more painful spots because the skin is thin over bone. Most people find the outer pec much easier to sit for.
